What is the difference between a Registrar and a Celebrant?

Registrars have the legal authority to perform and register civil ceremonies, such as weddings and civil partnerships.  They ensure that all legal requirements are met and the necessary paperwork is completed. The content of registrar-led ceremonies is more standardised and may be limited by legal guidelines. While registrars do aim to make the ceremony personal, there might be restrictions on the inclusion of specific personal elements or religious content.

A Celebrant is a trained individual who leads ceremonies or special events. These include weddings, funerals, naming ceremonies and other ‘rites of passage’. They create personalised and meaningful ceremonies that reflect the beliefs, values and wishes of the individuals involved.  They are skilled in public speaking and help to make these important moments memorable and unique.
